Le Select Bistro is very close to you on Wellington west of Spadina. It's a mid-priced sit down place open for lunch and dinner, and Sunday brunch.
For good espresso, there are other options that are closer than Sam James:
Sense Appeal on Spadina and Adelaide may be the best near you.
Even closer is Soma, on King just west of Spadina, which is primarily a chocolatier, but they do have good espresso (along with great baked goods).
If you some mini-donuts along with decent espresso, there's Little Nicky's on Peter at Richmond.
Depending on how much free time you have, you should consider getting a weekly transit pass. You will be able to explore much more of Toronto very quickly via streetcar. Being close to Spadina, you're a quick streetcar ride away to many more dining options. Just staying along Spadina, there's the Spadina Chinatown, Kensington Market area, and Harbord Street (high concentration of restos, including Splendido).
