Just noticed that Pizzeria Via Mercanti in Kensington Market has started selling house made gelato/sorbetto. They had a selection of around 6 flavours covering the basics. Such as chocolate, hazelnut, pistachio, lemon, wild strawberry, etc.
Their normal serving is $4.50 for two flavours. I had pistachio and strawberry. First, the serving was very generous. I liked the very smooth texture. Some places chill the gelato way too cold. The strawberry had a nice balance of tart and sweet. The pistachio flavour was not as pronounced. I liked it had a natural muted green colour and not the artififical almost neon green commonly seen.
I'm not sure if I'd make a special trip for it. But it's a welcome addition to the booming KM area. Especially with Mr. Cream gone and the Latin cafe close to El Trompo hasn't served gelato in many years. Hopefully Via Mercanti will keep this a regular warm weather item.
