The only thing good about High Street are their meat pies. Very tasty. As for fish and chips, there was no flavour! Looked good, but tasted as you said mediocre.
I have also tried St. Andrews and Chippys and they both were disappointing. As for Duckworth's too pricey for what you get and it's okay.
I have three places that I go to:
1) Malt and Salt on Lawson Ave. in east Scarborough - You can choose from halibut or haddock with fresh cut fries. Their batter is excellent IMHO. Take out only. Very good portions.
2) The Black Dog Pub on Island Rd. in east Scarborough - They only serve halibut, but they use a nice beer batter. Their fries are fresh cut fries as well. If it wasn't for the batter at Malt and Salt and their choice of halibut or haddock, I may have put Black Dog at the top. Good pub atmosphere. Take out or dine in. Very good portions.
3) Highland Fish and Chips - This place is not as consistent as the first two. However they offer halibut, haddock and cod. Again fresh cut fries. Take out or dine in. Decor is ala 1970's basement. No debit. Good portions.
