Ice cream and gelato season 2013

I really like Malak pastry on Bank st in Ottawa. It is a Lebanese bakery and they make their gelato and ice cream with only real, fresh ingredients and no fruit puree or flavorings. If you get raspberry sorbet it has actual pieces of real raspberry in it. But I tried a cherry ice cream once and it did not have as much taste- prob because they used fresh cherries and nothing like almond or cherry flavour- it was still good, just not my favorite. My mother loves the banana gelato and buys 4 liters at a time as they do not make it every week- so she orders it ahead and brings it home (she is in montreal). Malak had a amazing dark chocolate raspberry gelato last year and it was so good and not too sweet and had raspberry pieces in it! They also make Lebanese ice cream called Ashta- I have yet to see any other place in my city make it. It is really different from any other ice cream- it is kind of gummy, has some rosewater (I think) and pistachios or almonds. The owner is also very nice and will let you try pretty much all the kinds of gelato if you want and you can get several kinds in one cup- even for the small cups. And often enough the owner might also give people a cookie or pastry to try :) Also forgot, they have REAL pistachio ice cream- not that green stuff with tons of almond extract and no nuts. But they use real cream, milk, pistachios and there is actual bits of nut in it too!
