Where to buy sodium alginate and other rare ingredients.

So I've been able to find some common ingredients (xanthan gun, citric acid, etc.) but can't for the life of me find others (sodium citrate, maltodextrin, etc) and the Québécois molecule-r link is just too damn expensive to even consider. Stumbled across willpowder.net, an American company out of Florida that sells modernist/molecular ingredients in reasonable quantities, ships to Canada and doesn't pull your pants down over the price. Have placed an order; shall advise on suitability once it arrives.

The Dumpling House on Gerrard

We just had dumplings at the one on Spadina the other day. I know it was "the one" that was in the news a few years ago (for all the wrong reasons), but I thought that it was pretty good. But I will definitely try the place on Gerrrard - it's not far from where I live.

bread baking class(es)

this will probably be deleted by the mods, but since you asked -- i'd recommend taking a look at: 1) peter reinhardt, the bread baker's apprentice 2) jeff hammelman, bread and 3) www.thefreshloaf.com working through these resources should provide a decent grasp of the basics for bread baking.

Restaurant For Small Wedding Reception

Banjara on Bloor- & Madras on Bloor is it worth a visit? New to Bloor and Bathurst and Hungry!

I like both places. Madras is pretty much the only place you can get south indian west of Greenwood. However, although I thought they shared a kitchen, whenever I get naan at Madras, it doesn't taste like it came from a tandoor. It doesn't have the right consistency, it seems more like it was baked in an oven.

Best oxtail,where to buy???

Any grocery stores open on Christmas?

Many thanks! Got in just before closing :)

Goulash House Newmarket

We live a block away so are lucky enough to have been a few times now. Schitzel is great, and the goulash is a masterpiece. Tradititonal sides made just as they are back home, and spaetzle just like my Grandmother made. The service is outstanding, right down to having the door held open for us when we leave. We have taken a wide variety and friends and family here and everyone has left full and happy! (and yes, Made in Mexico is a block away and is excellent also, a little noisier atmosphere but lots of fun)

Schnitzel restaurants

It's still around. Was there last week. Schnitzel was generously sized, crispy and light.

Is Dining Date Night still working?

I sent a suggestion to them and received a thanks via e-mail that said they were going to be doing some revisions. Sorry, I didn't save it. No, in order to receive the DDN discount you have to book through DDN. That's kinda the deal.

Christmas at Toronto: Good idea or not?

I agree with the other posts that Christmas Day is probably not the best time to visit Toronto. I am an American and had the good fortune of living in Toronto for almost 3 years. It is a world class city and a fantastic place to be. I miss being a TTC ride away from something interesting to see, do or eat.

White M&Ms in GTA?

A Finnish brand called Fazer makes a candy called Avec which is just like Smarties but comes in white, pastel pink, and pastel green, and tastes minty. Unfortunately, it only comes in 150 g bags, mixed in colour. I've seen it sold at Hillside Bakery but I believe they are closed until after New Year's. Possibly Viking importers on Railside might have some? Too bad it's too late for you to order some M&Ms online. I know that white M&Ms are available in M&M World retail stores in the U.S. (NYC, Orlando, Las Vegas) but I don't know if they would be willing to ship you some?

KNIFE in toronto

Definitely worth checking out. Eugene is a great guy, nice to have his shop here.

Shiso Tree Cafe - An interesting 'Pasta' find inside J-Town!

Has anybody tried this place recently? Reports on other blogs have suggested that quality has declined....

Great pecan pie?

i enjoy the pecan pie (and pecan squares) at yummy stuff on queen west. buttery crust and very fresh pecans.... they don't always bake the pies (though they always have the squares) so call ahead to ensure availability-luckily (or maybe the temptation isn't always so lucky) i walk by it every day coming home from work...i look in-pie? score! or i look in and ? no pie-sad face-keep walking

Food in Aurora / Newmarket?

I live for butter tarts, and I have to say that nothing even comes close to the Maid's Cottage Butter Tarts.

A-ok foods (ramen by yours truly)

actually, it is possible to have a vegan version of foie gras (though i have never had it). ;) http://blogs.sfweekly.com/foodie/2011/12/vegan_foie_gras_in_process.php http://www.thekitchn.com/is-tofu-misokuke-really-a-vegan-foie-gras-175897 and a couple "faux gras" recipes that sound good, without having to be compared to foie gras: http://nofoiegras.org/fauxGras.html i know the chowhound mods are gonna come after me..

Has anyone used Fooddel? (New delivery service from St. Lawrence Market)

I saw a groupon for Fooddel offering $40 of SLM goods for $19. I guess it's basically like a Grocery Gateway for the market. Their website looks like there's a reasonable selection. $10 delivery charge not covered by the groupon. Has anyone used them? Experiences?

Where to find the BEST Eggplant Parmesan in TO?

Highly recommend Alimento. Light, delicious and well-priced. I remember having one from 7 Numbers Danforth. It was good, but not their best item on the menu.

The Best Vegetarian Sandwiches in Toronto

I totally agree; as a meat eater I sometimes take the Eggplant sandwich instead (although I usually get the chicken w/ eggplant). I'd avoid their "veggie" sandwich, though, because I think its just bread + sweet peppers + sauce.
