Go to Banh Mi Boys on at Queen and Spadina. Everything on the menu is good. You are in a Foodie Paradise! Have fun. Canadians are a nice bunch, too.

The Best Vegetarian Sandwiches in Toronto

If you are feeling fancy: I had tea at the Kind Edward hotel and they accomodated several vegetarians (they appreciate advance notice) with some delicious vegetarian options. It was nice to not have to eat just the desserts for a change at high tea. I like tea there better than I've had at the Four Seasons and the Windosor Arms (all those mirrors!!). for what it's worth. In a pinch, Aroma espresso bar totally surprised me with a super fresh chopped egg salad sandwich. If you are near Yonge & Lawrence and want a healthy Italian version of a "parmiggiano" sandwich, they do a grilled eggplant/zucchini with their true in-house tomato sauce and is vegan unless you ask for mozzarella or add parmiggiano yourself liberally. Super healthy and easily have half to eat later or all of it if you are hungry.

Cassoulet- but where?

I thought Batifole's escargot was pretty good but not their cassoulet. I thought it was mediocre, and the whole dish a stodgy mess.

There are many many restaurants that could be listed, but it's just too broad. You would have better luck searching through other threads.

Gabardine takes reservations for their dinner service but not for lunch. I would pick Gab over Richmond Station for a first date ... the atmosphere is more laid back. Also I think Gab is less expensive than RS. Both have great food.

Changes at Debu?

I just received a $10 coupon for this place in the mail. Didn't realize it was in the Debu spot. It looks like a Chinese/Indian mix menu, which I'm always game for. I'll definitely be trying out their seafood/veg dishes some time soon.. though it appears also that they have no liquor licence based on the website: http://www.marigoldtoronto.com/desserts-drinks/

ISO GTA's best Yukgaejang

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yukgaejang Winter time for me means Yukgaejang season, but I've been consistently disappointed by most offerings around North York/Christie. Friends, colleagues, and neighbors seem to suggest that its a Fools Errand, as the best Yukgaejang is made at home. Surely there is one place in the whole of the GTA that can offer up a passable version of this dish. Thoughts?

ISO christmas/winter market...with gluhwein

Yeah, I was actually trying to describe the typical weihnachtsmarkt to some coworkers two weeks ago to see if there were any that they knew of here or in Montreal. Most were clueless at what I was getting at. My manager (also a bit of a foodie) said he went to the one Distillery District... but it lacked lustre. And certainly no distilled caramel (or something?) 55% ABV beverages to be had. Or spekulatius.

Turducken from Klosters

Anyone ever order or have tried the turducken from Kloster's Butcher Shop in Newmarket? Thinking of ordering from them... they're cheaper and offer a bigger product than the places I've researched in the GTA. Any other suggestions?

Any suggestions for a non-steak house that serves a good steak?

Yes this kind of snow calls for gear boots, if you want to get around on foot! Mark's Work Wearhouse (there is one at Bay & Dundas, just a few outdoor steps from the Eaton Centre, which is on the PATH), has practical options and should have sales on right now. Or, there's always cabs and cozy pubs ;)

I've ordered a turducken from a great place called Off the Bone in Mississauga. We had it for Easter this past year, and it was delicious - fresh and reasonably priced. I know this is pretty late but I thought I'd just put my two cents in!

Henckels knife sharpener in TO?

Hi there! I have a three year old Zwilling Henckel's chef's knife I want to get professionally sharpened. I've seen posts recommending places to take Japanese knives, I'm wondering if there's a particularly trusted place (in the city) you'd recommend for German blades! Thanks!

probably none, because there is a distinct lack of anything that resembles a good bbq restaurant in the toronto area i know that memphis fire in stoney creek is ok and i've been meaning to try buster rhino but i don't classify either of them as toronto this place... i don't trust it

I've been a fan of Scott Pennock way back from his days at Pastis and then Biff's. I just learned that left Gio's to open his own place called The Emerson and wondering if anyone has been?

Did he say this publicly or just to you directly afterwards. Curious to know who the "noted" chef is. There are some people that can be great cooks but not necessarily know a lot about food science.

Try some of our newer restos. You may have luck getting a reservation at Kingyo - that would be lucky IMO. Depending on your prefs, Zakkushi's offering may be too casual as it is basically grilled items on a stick - but great tasting and a fun place.

Back in the bad old days they used to make plastic wrap and the like by adding phthalates as a plasticizer to PVC, bad stuff, displays estrogenic activity and at least one type is a known carcinogen. Easy to detect though as phthalates give off a noticeable plastic/new car smell. They stopped using these plasticizers in food applications a long time ago, decades (in Europe they have been completely banned for all purposes, not just food, since 2005). Most of the bags for vacuum sealing on the market aren't made this way, the Jarden FoodSaver bags are made of polyethelene with a nylon outer layer. PE is generally considered to not leach problematic chemicals into food. The energies involved in regular (or sous vide) cooking are not high enough to break the chemical bonds that hold the polymer molecules together so they stay stable and stay put. Microwaves on the other hand...never microwave food in a plastic container.
