I know you asked for italian, but I ran into a nice looking portuguese hot table in a grocery store today. If you are in the dundas and ossington/dufferin area, have a peek! I didn't try anything but everything looked delicious and there were a lot of people getting food. M & M Fruit & Grocery 1263 Dundas St W

Which seafood and veg dishes do you recommend the most? I also tend to focus on veg dishes at Indian restaurants.

I strolled in, but didn't buy. Breads looked fine but pastries (at least some of them) looked 'bought-in' - particularly the macarons which only came in identical boxed sets. I glanced at the prepared foods (for lunch) and 3 of the 4 featured tomatoes - which aren't in season right now! The sandwiches looked like the best bet - but seemed expensive for the area - very small baguettes for $10.95 - significantly higher than Boccone say (cf. $6.95 and larger portions) which is my benchmark in the neighbourhood. BUT, to be fair, I didn't do a taste test. My guess is that their overhead is massive, given the size of the space (I think the previous occupant seated over 100), so I'm not sure whether this will be a success based on the handful of people dining their for their $21.95 prix-fixe menu, which seemed to be on a steam-table.

Has anyone tried "crazy wings"

I tried the Bulgogi beef burger there and it's tasty. They use chipped or sliced beef cooked in a flavorful sauce and pile it high on a bun (not ground beef), and the dish comes with fries. I only had it once there and I would definitely have it again.

So, to follow up on this thread I started a while back, managed to get there last night. We did the chef's tasting menu. It is basically a family style meal with a lot of the menu presented. Overall it was an enjoyable meal and definitely worth it at $50 a head. I don't know what the minimum group size is to do it but worth while inquiring if you want to get a taste of the restaurant. I would say the weakest part was the desserts. Not much of a "wow" factor presentation or taste wise. Favourite dish was the tartare. The burger was tasty as well. The fish dishes were also enjoyable but too me they tasted even richer than the meat dishes! One aspect that I didn't like service wise was the pacing of the meal. They brought out all of the apps at once, then all of the salads and then all of the mains, then all of the desserts. The issue was really with all of the mains coming at once. There was a long wait between the salads and the mains coming out. Everyone on the table said they would have preferred if they brought out one of the mains, then another like 5/10 minutes later. Or even two at a time. There was 4 different main dishes and it seemed like a frantic rush to try things while they were still warm. It might have had to do with the size of our group as well. Anyway, the only other time I have had a "family style" multicourse meal was at an Italian wedding or a Chinese restaurant so I have no comparison to how other spots handle pacing. I think it is definitely something that the group would have to be pretty comfortable with each other to do this type of tasting menu. I don't know if anyone mentioned but they added a curtain by the front door. I don't know if that helps with keeping the cold out or not but I could see what people are saying about eating downstairs. If I went again, I probably would request to eat on the 2nd level as it seems like a roomier space. The place is definitely doing a brisk business. Was very full last night which is good to see.

Took my husband for his birthday last month and we both really liked our meal. We shared the giant meatball, involtini, pasta special (lamb ragu) and side of brussel sprouts and it was all delicious. Only miss was the frito misto: the seafood was overcooked and it was under-seasoned.

Regarding the GB classes. I'm not looking to become a chef, I just want to improve my cooking skills. Are their classes worth it for that?

CALIFORNIA BURRITOS-OAKVILLE

So I got back to this place again for the 2nd time. I remember having an enjoyable meal the first time around but I enjoyed my meal the 2nd time even more. I had the steak burrito and they had some great options/add-ons. For example a sweet potato puree. They have a deal right now where when you buy a burrito/taco you get a free canned drink and some nacho chips. The normal price for a burrito is in the $8 range. Quality ingredients, worth while trying. I think I heard the cook say that 80% of their ingredients are organic. What I wasn't too much a fan of though was the music... They had some latin music playing from the TV and it was a bit loud for my taste (maybe because I wasn't a huge fan of listening to reggaeton music while having my meal). They also had candles burning on the side (like candlebra style candles!) which I thought was kind of weird. The place is really casual, order at the counter, they will bring the food out to you. I will definitely be back soon.

Yuzu Kosho

I'm not sure that they have it at J-Town. I didn't see any last time I was there. I was searching for Yuzu Kosho when it first came out as the latest thing but I could not find any in Toronto. I managed to order some online and also found some in a store in NY. I'm not sure if it has become available in Toronto but I do encourage you to find some. I first tried it at a yakitori bar in NY and loved it so much I went on a serious search for some. No luck in TO at the time but I ordered some from chefshop.com and it was great.

Just a bump to say they are indeed selling the sandwiches for $1 today. Worth it, but they were getting slammed as I left around 1.

Indeed they did charge $5 for the bread & butter (it was the churned one) - the only 'bad thing' was that the charge wasn't shown anywhere on the menu - it just 'appeared'. I'm sure they'll make sure one knows it's churned in-house (if indeed it is the same one).

Luke's is interesting but the cooking is very adventurous verging on stunt cooking and it does not always work (the one beef dish I had sounded great on paper but getting the crispy crust on the outside meant the inside was overcooked and dry). They do try to make the room nice (and by "they" I mean Luke and his mom Carrie) but it can feel a little odd, especially if you are the only diners in the place which is a frequent experience.
