I tried on a Monday about 6 weeks ago. They were already full at 6:10pm.

Best Doughnuts in Toronto
What was funny was the comment on BlogTO that this place could be a "front"...
What gets me is two whole strips of bacon (that don't look like they are candied at all) on that one donut!

looking to buy a Dicks offset bread knife in the GTA any ideas where?
You could, but a good bread knife is a joy to use and really does make a difference. For example, cut a crusty bread with a bad vs good knife and you'll feel it immediately and also see a ton of crumbs all over your board with a cheap knife.
I have a Tojiro DP Bread knife which is amazing, and everyone at work always asks to borrow my knife. I'd much rather have a cheap, disposable paring knife (and I do).
SO yeah...Tojiro DP Serrated bread knife....best bread knife out there, for not that much money!

I'm glad your dad doesn't let it hold him back from having dinner out. What does he like to eat?

Lil' Baci Yonge Street
Just wanted to do a short review of Lil' Baci Yonge Street. I have been for both brunch and dinner, and will be returning this week for lunch. It is that good. I enjoyed the dinner menu better than the brunch. The brussel sprout pizza is awesome. I usually do not enjoy truffle oil on anything - but it is done with a very light touch on the pizza . The service was outstanding on both visits. We love Nick. If you can sit in his area, do so! Reservations are available on opentable, which I find really convenient.

alternative to Soma
Ha! They weren't kids complaining with that particular box of Soma, they were the Baby Boomers in my cooking class!
I like Mrs. See's packaging ideas, too.

Quinta - delicious Portugese, with a modern twist
A weekend dinner for two. Superb food, attentive service, surprisingly not crowded.
Appetizers:
Quinta Caldo Verde (vegetarian version): beautiful pureed kale in a cream broth. I thought the cream was a tad bit heavy, but my companion practically licked the bowl.
Lobster Balls: Very greasy, so I asked for some piri piri. Our lovely waitress came back with this precious bottle of housemade piri piri that was out of this world. I asked her to leave it at the table for us. Seriously, one of my favorite part of the whole evening. Ask for the hot sauce.
Mains:
Seared Tuna: there was ALOT of tuna, beautifully cooked and seasoned, served with root veg and fingerlings. The only disappointment was the quail eggs promised on the menu. They were overcooked and carelessly placed on the side. I was hoping for more of a runny egg concoction on top of my tuna.
Duck: pink in the middle, seared beautifully, delicious jus, and priced very reasonably for the portion.
Drink menu: nothing to write home about. Concise, smart, fairly priced.
Dessert: didn't have any, but looking around, we should save our stomachs for some next time.
Nicely priced, nice ambiance, beautiful food. I would go back soon.

Best of Toronto for 2 for $250 or less
Yeah, the bottle of wine part would make that an uphill battle.
You could go pretty crazy with that budget at Zen (though OP suggests a downtown-focus). 2 diners could sit at the bar for omakase sushi and sake and have quite a bit of change from the $250.

Goulash House Newmarket
I'll try and get there over the holidays, Thanks for the review; in fact I've followed a number of your recommendations when I've travelled in the US so I know I'll enjoy this one in my own backyard just as much.
BTW we ended up satisfying our comfort food craving (after cutting the Christmas tree) at Cambodian Noodle King in Newmarket. I had fried lort (the Cambodian spaezle) with beef and my husband enjoyed the curry chicken soup.stew (the Asian version of goulash).

Restaurants with reasonable wine mark-ups?
Thanks for editing your post. Now I get it. Applying for a revision to the licence, ie a BYOB rider, invites another inspection.

What are the most developed ethnic cousines in Toronto?
I would agree if you are looking for the truest version of the cuisine. I love sushi and sashimi and know of many restaurants in Mississauga and Toronto with great food however my hubby and I were in Tokyo (didn't enjoyed the earthquake) and went to a little cubby at the Tsukiji Fish Market and had fresh sashimi for breakfast - I don't think that I could ever relive that experience unless I go back to visit. That isn't a bad thing as we have great sushi and japanese food here in the city - it just will always be different and not 100% traditional. I do have to say that I enjoy the cantonese food here better than what I had in Beijing and Hong Kong. Go figure.

Best Doughnuts in Toronto
The comments on BlogTO made me laugh as well. Too funny..
I have been by this Planet Donut location a few times, as it's directly across from Madina Mosque (and a few doors down from Makkah Restaurant). I honestly thought it was another in a litany of restaurant attempts by the local Gujrati/Indian/Bengali/Pakistani population. So I never gave credence to it.
That location is cursed. It has been every type of restaurant under the sun the past few years. Chester Fried Chicken, Shawarma, Samosa/Fried Food place, Indian takeout, Cheap Pizza shop. You name it - it's been it.
Guess we can now add Doughnut Shop to that list.
Anyways, I will try it out and not cast judgement until then.
But it does look kind of ghetto and this 'gourmet' doughnut shop is a few blocks east of where it would be justified charging these prices.

Cooking classes in Toronto
Hi all. I'm interested in taking a cooking class in the new year and I'm wondering what experiences others have had with them. Specifically, I'm looking for courses that aren't too expensive and cover either basic cooking skills or baking rather than something more specific such as vegan or Chinese.Has anyone tried classes at The Good Egg in Kensington?
I'm sure there are threads that cover this topic already up but this kind of information always changes. Many thanks

Hoof Raw Bar
Great spot. I live a block away, and have a ton of choice where to spend my $. Hoof, Raw and Cocktail are a triumvirate of awesomeness, that, as noted above complement each other very well for a complete evening out. Or a snack. Ask for the off-menu special of their McD inspired Filet of Fish. Decadent, especially with a Spearhead ale in hand.
